Seven Fun Summer Ideas to Keep Your Kids Busy On A Budget

Seven Fun Summer Ideas to Keep Your Kids Busy On A Budget

We've rounded up some of our favourite, creative things to do that won’t break the bank and can all be done from the comfort of home.

Make Your Own Scent

It’s really easy to make your own petal perfume at home, and all you need is some rose petals, water, a glass bottle to store your perfume in, a strainer, and something to crush the petals (like a pestle and mortar). It’s a fun, hands-on way to experience this gorgeous light summer smell and bring some rose magic into your home!

Create a Herbarium

Be inspired by the natural world and create your own herbarium, which is a book where each item (a flower or leave or something else from the natural world) is described. The flowers or leaves are stuck onto the page as examples. It’s a great way to get to know the flowers in your garden, and you can keep adding more to your book until it’s full.

Explore the Night Sky

Hot, blue sky days often mean clear skies and night, and what better time to make the most of warm evenings than during the summer holidays. The best time for star gazing is before or around a new moon when there’s less light from the moon to drown out the stars. On August 14th, Saturn will be visible from sunset to sunrise, as it will lie on the opposite side of the earth to the sun.

Keep A Holiday Diary

Whether you’re staying at home or going somewhere new, keeping a holiday diary is a great daily record of your summer. Describe your day, what the weather’s like, places you go, or conversations you have. You can also draw the places you visit or stick things in, like leaflets or postcards! Some of the most famous writers and artists have kept diaries throughout their lives and they are a fascinating record of what day-to-day life is like.

Feed the Birds

Encourage birds into the garden with a tasty treat such as this bird kebab. It’s made using things that you might have already  in the kitchen, like apples, bread, and cheese. It’s a fun and easy activity and a great way to use up some things in your kitchen that might otherwise go to waste.

Create A Sand Art Picture

Create a fun piece of artwork using some sand and imagination. It’s a fun, hands-on activity, perfect for creating something that will remind you of summer and can be of anything that you like. You don’t need much to get started, some paper, sand, glue, and your imagination.

Flower Pressing

Collect some flowers and leaves from the garden, making sure to choose ones that are small and light as they’re easier to press. Put them between some newspaper and then stack heavy books on top. Soon you’ll have dried flowers, perfect for using for cards, artwork, or anything else that your imagination conjures up!
